Ever wonder why the person who helps you find a seat or gets you chips is called a “Brush”? The term is derived from the old days when Poker was played in the Saloons out west. Back then, the cowboys dirty and dusty from the trail would leave evidence of their presence at the poker table behind with piles of dust that had fallen off their clothes while they played. Upon leaving the game the Dealer would call for a “Brush” to clean off the seat for the next player. This is how the Brush would always know where the empty seats in the game are!

Over the centuries the position of the Brush has evolved to become one of the most important people in the Poker room. Usually working in conjunction with the Floor person, the Brush (sometimes also called Host) will be the first person you speak to when entering a Poker room. They will help you find a seat in the game of your choice, offer alternatives if your desired game is full or put you on the list for a seat….a list that is called the “Brush Board”. Brushes also run chip fills to the game and will help a player with a buy-in or color-up when needed. Brushes no longer carry the brush with them but sure enough at the end of the night they still use a brush on every table and chair that was used that day.
